Day 6: Brooklyn Bridge, WTC Memorial, Empire State Building

Day 6 started out a little rough. Because we were staying in NJ we had to take a bus through the Lincoln Tunnel and connect to a subway at Port Authority Bus Terminal  to get on the subway lines. It was a particularly rough this morning, because after walking a ways to the bus stop, waiting, trying to find a spot on a crowded spot with all of our people, the stroller, wheelchair, and backpacks, and then walking a ways to get to the subway system, we then had to wait in lines to get all of our passes for the subway. This doesn't sound so bad, but the lines were long and we waited in three of them because we couldn't get our credit card to work after a couple of purchases. Then we had to wait in an extra long line to get my mom a half price ticket, which was kind of lame, because we could only get a ticket, not a pass, which would have been good for the week. Definitely not worth the long line to talk to the agent.

Because we took so long getting to the Brooklyn bridge, we didn't have time to walk around the Dumbo area of Brooklyn like we were planning on. Unfortunately we still got off at that stop, which made for kind of a long walk over to the bridge. Honestly walking across the bridge wasn't so long, but it was a least double to walk from where you can get on to the bridge to where you can walk off of the bridge. So basically an extra long walk plus kids that have been waiting and walking all morning plus this was the first day that it was really hot and humid. It wasn't a great combo, so there was definitely some grumbling. Actually as I am writing this out, I am impressed that there wasn't more grumbling. If you can see Holland's face in the above photo, I think that is how all of us felt at one time or another during this day.

Fortunately we were able to take a much needed break and rest in the shade of the bridge's arches. We had lunch here and everyone seemed a bit better after that.

Having fun with Momma's sunglasses.

I am so glad that my mom had the transport chair. She couldn't have walked that far.

A little bit brighter and more sincere smiles after a rest and food.

We finished walking across the Brooklyn bridge and then tried to find another spot in the shade to rest. That was hard to find. To make things worse we were starting to run out of water. Thankfully it wasn't too far of a walk to the World Trade Center Memorial. And along the way we found these fun walls to take pictures with.

Miraculously we were able to find a place in the shade at the memorial that had a big drinking fountain area. Thankfully we were able to refill our empty waterbottles and get our cooling cloths wet. It was so nice.

We had a sober discussion/lesson about the 9/11 terrorists attacks. And we only got yelled at a little bit. It was a good stop.

Next we took the subway over to uptown to the Empire State Building. That was such a nice experience. It didn't seem overly crowded and everyone who worked there seemed really welcoming and professional except when they were yelling at us for various infractions (there were several).

I thought it was so interesting to see pictures and videos to learn about the building of the Empire State Building. I am so impressed with what these people were able to build.

Looking over to Brooklyn.

Uptown and Central Park.

I love this picture of my girls. They can be such good buddies sometimes.

My best buddy and me.

We like to kiss on the top of tall things.

Family picture looking towards down town. I love these people.

Selfie with one of my girls.

Looking at map didn't really make me appreciate how huge Manhattan is.

The spire of the Empire State Building and another one of my middle one. So obviously we kept getting yelled at for resting Holland on the wall next to the barrier, but we also got yelled at for sitting down inside. There are no benches or seats of any kind (I guess they don't want people to linger overly long) so we found a quiet corner to sit on the floor for a minute to rest our feet. It felt so good until one of the security officers came by and made us stand up.

We took an Uber back to the apartment and then ate some dinner. What a busy, fun, exhausting day.
