Christmas Trip to Utah

On Christmas Eve we got up at 3:30 am to make our 6 am flight. It was early. Someone in our ward had offered her husband to drive us to the airport when we went to Utah, but that was before either one of them realized our flight was so early. Fortunately they were super sweet and wanted to do it anyway (well, at least they were positive and willing). :)

Our kids were rock stars on the plane. They both did really well, which was a big blessing. We flew into the Provo Airport and ran outside in the snow storm to buckle the carseats in my mom's car. Man, it was a shock! My hands were shaking so much from the cold I could hardly help. I had come from weather in the 70s, and my body was reeling from the sudden climate shift.

We were at my parents house on Christmas morning. They (my parents) knew we weren't bringing many presents in our luggage to have the girls open first thing Christmas morning, so they surprised the girls with a bunch of educational toys and games. The kids really loved it.

After that was my family's Christmas breakfast and gift exchange. The little kids got real presents while the siblings exchange white elephant presents.

We were bestowed a planetary model, in which each of the planets were some choice DI t-shirts. Like John's 'I have gas' gem.

Then it was up to the rehab center to see my grandparents. My grandpa had recently fallen and broken his hip. So he was a patient there. It was so weird and sad not to have my grandparents at everything on Christmas. I was so blessed to grow up right next door to these sweet people.

Miriam received a moose from them, which she loved! Ellie got a golden purse with lip gloss and nail polish (basically a dream come true).

Loving on the moose and rockin' the BYU Santa hat.

We had a wonderful time visiting John's side too. Miriam loved hanging out with Uncle Spencer and the abundant treats at Grandma and Grandpa's house.

We had some formal pictures taken of that side of the family. Unfortunately not everyone could be there. However we are glad to have something to be able to print off and hang on the wall to represent that side of our family.

Grandma and Grandpa with some of the grandkids.

The girls.

The men.

And our little family.

These pictures were followed by a really fun evening at John's sister's house. We love being with our families!

We also had the opportunity to see some friends while we were in Utah and enjoy some delicious fondue. Our friends both served their missions in France and they really know how to serve some delicious cheeses. :) Miriam was acting silly and insisted on sitting on my lap, which is why I am in the children's picture.

I was really bad at taking photos the rest of our trip, but we really loved seeing everyone! I especially loved the girls' night out. Gotta love chick flicks!
On our flight home we saw Mt. Timpanogos peeking through the clouds. It made us homesick for Utah Valley. However we are happy to be starting the next stage in our life.

Yeah, we didn't make our kids keep their seat belts on during the flight. It is funny how as a parent sometimes you just decide there is a battle not worth fighting. Like keeping a wiggly two year old oriented correctly and buckled on a flight. Fortunately Ellie was sitting in front of Miriam, so we weren't worried about her kicking a stranger's seat the entire flight. Sorry Ellie. :)

Ellie drew this picture of the nativity on the flight. Notice the sheep and the shepherd. Also the wise man's crown. Love her.

And the fun continued when we got home. Our little family's gift exchange. The kids were so nice and happy about everything. It was perfect.

Merry Christmas!

From my journal: We woke up nice and early the next day 3:30 to make our 6 am flight. Poor Murray Pratt was volunteered to take us to airport. The kids did so well though. And my mom picked us up in freezing, icy Provo. Miriam had four accidents that day, but I think it was understandable. We got to my parents house and they had set up the bunk beds for the kids. We took naps and helped make Christmas Eve dinner. That dinner was really nice. But it was weird to not have Grandma and Grandpa Lucas there. We helped with the dinner and did the nativity. Ellie got weirdly shy in the middle of it. But it was still cute and fun.

The next morning Miriam got me and Ellie up at 6 am. Fortunately they didn't have the expectation to run downstairs and open presents immediately so John and my parents were able to sleep in a bit. I made muffins and Ellie actually threw up twice. Poor girl, throwing up on Christmas morning. Fortunately it was just a fluke and she wasn't sick for very long and no one else got sick. I think it was because of the piece of Zicam I gave her the night before.

The girls opened some presents from Grandma and Grandpa after they got up. They gave the girls a lot of educational stuff that they had been given. It was really nice of them, and the kids really liked it. Kind of surprisingly.

Then we got ready and had delicious Christmas breakfast. Love it! We went downstairs and opened presents. My parents gave everyone a trip to Grand Canyon this summer. We did the white elephant exchange, and Aunt Carol always gives really nice gifts. Kayla kind of stole the show by making a teepee for Patti's kids. Sheesh Kayla, way to make the rest of us look lame. Patti did some fun pictures for people, and I gave Kayla's kids legos. :)

We went down to Pearsons' for a while. It was a fun visit. Especially because of how much Miriam liked Uncle Spencer. It was really cute. Matt and Norma and Hema were there too. It was fun to see everybody.

We stopped by my grandpa's rehab room. It was fun to see them. The kids were really nice, and my grandparents gave little presents to the girls. Miriam developed a love of M&Ms. My grandpa is making progress with his recovery but there are a few complications. It was really nice to see them though. The kids sang their Christmas songs.

That night we had Christmas dinner at my parents house. It was weird to have it not at Grandma's house or with my Grandparents. We missed them. We had a nice dinner and the gift exchange was fun. David and Patti did a funny gift for my grandparents. A picture of my grandparents with hair on my grandpa and a glammed up blond Grandma, with a note that said "We thought you might like some hair and a hot blond for Christmas." It was funny. People went to visit my grandparents and then the Armstrongs came back for pie. We stayed up way too late eating that.

The next day we went to the Guinn's house. It was fun to see them. Kind of felt like no time had passed at all. They made yummy fondue for lunch. That night me and the girls in my family did a girl's night by doing dinner at Zupas (loved the roasted red pepper and lobster soup) and then going to see Austenland at the dollar theater. It was so fun! One of my favorite memories of the whole trip.

The next day we visited my Grandpa again, got ice cream with McKenzie and went to Glenn and Andrea's house for the night. We got some yummy cheap food and played their Wii. The next day we went to John's parents' house again and then to temple square to have a family picture done. It was nice. Turned out better than I was hoping. It was our idea to hire Glenn to do this, but when we proposed it the idea it was met with some resistance. But anyway it worked out. That night we had the Pearson family dinner at Millie's house which was so nice and fun. Loved it. We miss those people.

The next day we went to church with my Grandparents and my parents fixed a special meal just for us. Then we headed down to John's parents house for a little while, and to Mady's baptism. Then we headed back to my parents house to hang out with David and Patti until bed time. Then the next day, mom made waffles and took us to the airport. It was a fun trip. Ellie commented to me today that she loved the trip to Utah.

The day that we came home, we went shopping and got food. It was nice. The next day (New Year's Eve) we opened our presents from our little family. This Christmas the girls were so sweet about everything. They really seemed to like everything, which was nice and didn't seem too greedy.  Ellie gave Miriam a cute stuffed pink elephant. Miriam gave Ellie a cute bunny figurine, which she loved. We gave Ellie legos and Miriam a strolller and pillow pet. The girls gave me some earrings and John gave me a cute wallet and an itunes card. John received lots of treats. Kind of boring. Sorry honey! We made a fun breakfast and went to the gym. That night we did game night with the Jacobson's over the video chat and had a really good time playing a new game King of Tokyo. We got it for them for Christmas and they surprised us with it as a welcome home present. Debbie is going to have a baby soon. Their 4th!

Christmas Festivities

After Thanksgiving, we did our traditional setting up the Christmas tree and drinking hot cocoa. This tradition is one from my childhood. I remember going to my grandparents' house next door, helping decorate their tree, and then turning off all of the lights and drinking cocoa and eating cookies and bananas while listening to Christmas music on my Grandma's record player. I loved it! I want to keep this tradition alive, and this year it couldn't have been sweeter.

The kids were so nice about decorating the tree; afterwards they wanted their cocoa in mugs with straws. Super cute. Then we turned off the lights, turned on the Christmas music and just sat as a family talking softly about Christmas. We ended up singing carols too. It was one of those moments that I never want to forget: looking at my sweet family, all holding hands, singing in the beautiful light of the Christmas tree. So blessed.

Ellie found our Santa hat and had to put it on. Miriam had to try it on too. Such a fun night.

We also continued our tradition of burning a small section of candle every day as a countdown to Christmas.

We paired the candle with a nightly message about Christ. We used the 25 Days of Christ, which was great. We made our own felt ornaments, which were a titch ghetto, but still carried the idea. :) We loved reading a scripture about Christ's mortal ministry and sometimes watching it portrayed in the new Bible videos the Church is producing. I was really impressed with how much the stories and details stuck with our kids (especially Ellie of course). She would look at any given ornament and talk about the story it represented throughout the month. It was a wonderful way to remember the Savior as the reason for the season.

For one date night in December, John and I made gingerbread houses. We were serious about this as the person that made the best one got a foot massage at the end of the date. (for the record we called it a tie) :) We also wanted to make them yummy, so we had to use cream cheese frosting and nutella as our glue. (This was also a fun way to use up some of the Halloween candy still hanging around.)

John's finished product.

Me with my finished house.

I didn't really do too many homemade presents this year, but I did make my nephew a dinosaur hat. It turned out pretty good, and Miriam tried to lay claim on it, but I kept it for little Owen.

I can't believe she fell asleep under her bed!

The weather was beautiful, and consequently we took the girls swimming in our complex's hot tub a couple of times. I just had to get a picture of the girls in their swimming suits with the Christmas wreath.

I've never gone swimming on my birthday outside before.

One weekend we did a fun family craft. We took coffee filters and dipped them in diluted paint and food coloring and let them dry.

Then we all cut out snowflakes with them. The kids loved it. Miriam particularly loves anything to do with scissors. It makes me nervous! Ellie did such a good job though. She really got the hang of it.

We hung them up on the ceiling fan and called it our 'snowflake chandelier.' It was pretty great, for a couple of weeks at which point Daddy got tired of running into them. :)

The Sunday before Christmas we drove to Mesa and saw the Christmas lights at the Mesa Temple. So beautiful! We really liked seeing the lights on the palm trees.

It was also fun to notice that with our jackets and coats we were a little too warm to be walking around outside at night (very different from our Utah Temple Square lights trips).

We were shocked at the number of people that were there. The sidewalks were so packed that you could barely move. Fortunately we weren't in a hurry, so it didn't really bother us. It was a beautiful evening, and if you are ever in the Phoenix area during the Christmas season, we highly recommend it!

From my journal: The month of December was a weird one for me. I loved it, but I didn't love it. Two years ago, Christmas time was crazy. Pinterest had just started up and I felt like I needed to give all of these handmade gifts. It was not the best. Too busy. I just felt overwhelmed with my to do list. Last year I decided "no" to the handmade gift idea and had a much better holiday. I really felt the "reason for the season." This year, it was some of both. I really felt the spirit of Christ in the Christmas holiday. We did a nightly story of Christ. The 25 Day of Christ, complete with a story and video for each day. It was really nice. I think the stories really stuck with the girls, and I know it was meaningful for me.

Despite this I felt way too busy to really enjoy the fun of the holiday. Making and sending Christmas cards, trying to order presents for everyone (but not spending too much money, because we have been feeling really poor the last few months), making and delivering Christmas goodies to people in our ward (my goodness this was a pain, it was so hard to find everyone's house. And it was kind of uncomfortable because we were trying to make friends, rather than just giving chocolates to people that were already our friends.), and I tried to do the 12 days of Christmas for John which didn't turn out nearly so well this year (because I was so busy and tried to not spend too much money). Bleh. It was funny to be that busy with Christmas despite not being able to do anything with our families.

We attended the ward Christmas party, which to be honest wasn't that fun. We didn't really talk to anyone. We need to make real friends! :) I went to a girls' night. It was fun. I am hoping to be more part of the 'group.' My goodness, I feel like I am in junior high again. :) We saw the first presidency devotional, went to a RS activity, made dinner for the missionaries, and attended a Honeywell BBQ that was kind of awkward, but hey, John got paid for going. :) We filled a couple stockings for underprivileged children, got the car repaired (hate that), went to two doctors appts, got our blood drawn, and went to one extravagant 5-year olds birthday party.

Then two days later we went to Utah for a week. Whew. Needless to say, we felt busy. I know this sounds complainy because we really did have a nice Christmas season, but I think that feeling like I couldn't spend money, but I was anyway really put the stress on. Then I felt guilty because of the stories I heard about people actually losing their jobs right before Christmas, the injuries people were suffering, etc.

Actually my grandpa fell and broke his hip a week or so before Christmas. So sad. He had an emergency hip replacement and is now in a rehab center. We have been praying so much for him and I am hopeful that he can recover well, but there is this part of me that knows when an older person falls and breaks something major, it is kind of the beginning of the end. I am hopeful this isn't the case though.

Of course we had so much fun though. I just love, LOVE my little family. I can't believe I am so lucky to have them, and I dread anything changing because I am in such a happy place right now. So Ellie isn't allowed to go to school, we are not allowed to buy a house or have any more children, and our current children aren't allowed to grow up at all. :) Just kidding of course. Actually Miriam has grown up in a major way. I am happy to report that she is potty trained! Wahoo! I feel like she is actually at the place where she will tell me if she needs to go. The most major issue we are having with her is waking up in the middle of the night and not being willing to go back to sleep. We have had to make her cry it out quite a bit recently between the hours of 1 am and 4 am. Sorry neighbors. She doesn't cry that whole time just most often wakes up during that time frame.

She said the cutest thing on my birthday. John and Ellie were joking around saying "I am right!" "No, I am right!" etc. When Miriam jumps in with "I'm left." It was so cute! Ellie also said something pretty funny: "Timeouts are a lot easier than making bread." Huh? It was funny. The girls really got into the Christmas songs this year, especially "Away in a Manger" "Angels We Have Heard on High" "Joy to the World" and more recently "Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus." They both sing those songs nonstop. Really. We enjoyed our Arizona Christmas weather immensely. We went swimming (in the hot tub) twice. And didn't wear jackets most of the time. We did a fun craft one day dying coffee filters and making snowflakes from them. We hung them from our ceiling fan, making a snowflake chandelier. Miriam LOVES to play with scissors. It is kind of scary. She doesn't have the same natural fear of sharp things that Ellie has. Miriam has grabbed the Cutco knives several times. Scares me to death.

We saw the Mesa temple lights. So fun. Glad it was warm too. It was also surprisingly crowded. We loved the lights on the palm trees. The Gilbert temple open house and dedication is coming right up. It is a pretty big deal. I have never before been in an area with a new temple being built. They are expecting a half a million people to come to the open house.

My birthday was really fun, although I feel weirdly old at being 27. John woke me up with a fresh smoothie. He actually only had to work a half day because it was the only day between the weekend and the Christmas holiday so everyone was gone and Yogi (his boss) said for him to mark half the day as a group meeting and go home. Sweet! We got ready for our trip the next day, made yummy sandwiches for dinner, ate more Christmas treats and went to bed. John gave me a headset for my phone and a new ebook to read. It was nice.

Thanksgiving 2013

We had a really nice Thanksgiving holiday. We did a thankful chain for Thanksgiving. Every night in November we each wrote we were thankful for on a piece of paper and made a long chain with them. Every single night Miriam said she was thankful for teeth. It was so cute!

Everybody really liked it. It was fun. Ellie was thankful for lots of things: bed, butterflies, toys, stories, elephants, Holy Ghost, etc. It really made me think about how many, many blessings I have in my life. It is impossible to name them all.

We stayed in Arizona this year. Our first Thanksgiving with just us. One of the families in the ward dropped by our apartment as they were leaving to California to give us a plate of goodies saying that they are thinking about us in our first Arizona Thanksgiving. It was so nice!

We made way too much food for Thanksgiving, but it was all delicious. The kids liked the exact opposite foods.

We also traced our hands and made fun turkeys out of them. It was a really nice Thanksgiving holiday.

Just a couple funny notes on the kids recently: Miriam has really given us a run for our money on the potty training idea since we moved here. She did super well for about 5 days and then for the last week we have had a lot of accidents. I am hoping that she decides that potty training is a good idea again.

Some funny things that Ellie has said recently:

"Miriam, after we go to sleep, Daddy and Mommy stay up late playing games and eating treats."

"Daddy, come see imagination."

After I said to her, "Ellie do you know what I love...you." "What about me? I love you!"

Miriam says funny things too.

She got after Ellie for doing something naughty. "Not okay Ellie. Not okay."

When Grandma Came to Town

In the middle of November my mom came down and visited us. Mostly it was to see these two little rascals. (Ah. I love matching clothes. :) )

We stayed pretty busy while she was here--shopping, eating, and playing. One of the favorite places that we played was the botanical gardens. The girls loved the butterfly garden. There were monarch butterflies everywhere. They loved using this little magnifying glass to see the details of the butterflies.

We liked seeing the cool plants too. Like the organ pipe cactus and the humongous aloe plant.

There were this cool exhibit going on called Chulily in the Garden. Pretty glass sculptures were intermingled with the cactus and plants. After the sun went down the glass sculptures were illuminated and shown gorgeous colors all around. I wish I had better pictures of it.

Back to the shopping again. While at Costco, my girls spotted the fancy Christmas dresses on display, and they talked Grandma into getting one for every single granddaughter. They loved picking out and trying on all of those dresses. We made quite a spectacle of ourselves.

When we got home we had to have another fashion show, but the girls were so silly and wouldn't smile normal for the camera. This is actually a pretty common occurrence.

We also took a trip to the Phoenix Children's Museum. So. Much. Fun. The loved it all. The humongous climbing tower. The pipes with air flowing through that the kids could push colorful scarves in and get them shot out elsewhere.

Painting on the castle.

And the tricycle car wash. There were a lot more activities, but the camera ran out of battery juice. Grrr. I hate it when that happens. Regardless, we had so much fun while Grandma came to town.
John and I also got to attend the temple while she was here, which was a blessing. Finally, we just had to take a photo on  9:10 11/12/13. :)
9:10 11/12/13  :)
